Creativity Flourishes at Spaulding Youth Center’s Authors Tea

The literary accomplishments of students at Spaulding Youth Center were celebrated at the annual Authors Tea. Families and staff toured the classrooms and listened to students read their personal creations. Among the offerings were compelling adventures of dragons, whimsical poetry and beautifully designed shape books.
Teacher Theresa Hemmer engaged all her students’ senses in the creative process. Each student, dressed in a chef’s outfit, prepared and shared with classmates a special dish in the Life Skills Suite while staff snapped photos. Using the photos and writing about the cooking procedure, each student created an informative and entertaining shape book about the cooking demonstration. One student chef made a book in the shape of a cracked egg showing his preparation of scrambled eggs, while others made shape books about making pizza and chicken pot pie.
School Principal and Special Education Director Colleen Sliva commented on the Authors Tea. “Creative writing is such a powerful outlet for our students. As well as the pride they feel in publishing their own book, the Authors Tea provides a channel for sharing their accomplishments with family, friends and peers.”
Spaulding Youth Center leverages professional expertise to help young people with autism or other developmental and/or behavioral challenges learn the academic and life skills needed to be successful in their homes, schools and communities.
