Spaulding Youth Center Holds Annual Science Fair
April 19, 2018Spaulding Youth Center is thrilled to announce the conclusion of another successful annual Science Fair on April 13, 2018. Family and friends of students were invited to attend the special event hosted at the organization’s Northfield, New Hampshire campus and encouraged to spend the morning learning about a variety of scientific topics.
In the weeks leading up to the event, these topics were thoroughly investigated using standard scientific methods and the findings neatly presented both visually and verbally by the students. Each class identified a different scientific hypothesis of interest, worked together to conduct experiments, then developed a presentation of what they had learned throughout the process. Classroom teachers facilitated the projects and encouraged students to engage in each step along the way. Students were given criteria to follow at the start of each project and were judged and rewarded at the science fair based on their performance.
A variety of scientific topics were explored that showcased the diversity of the students’ interests, including: the effects of soda and other liquids on tooth enamel; how different naturally-occurring materials are affected by various weather conditions; an assessment of how much food waste could be saved by composting; and how grass responded to being watered using various liquids. One topic involved research on natural anti-bacterial agents, such as tea tree, peppermint, cinnamon and rosemary oils. One student even tested dog drool as an anti-bacterial!
“Students, relatives and staff were all excited to be part of this fantastic event. The science fair is one great example of the many annual campus happenings which provide instructive and therapeutic outcomes for our students,” said Principal Colleen Sliva. “This educational event provides a chance for our students to participate in a traditional school event, for our parents to watch their child thrive in an integrated school activity, and for our community to come together and celebrate the hard work and successes of our students.”
