From the Rainforest to the Racecourse: Spaulding’s Summer Highlights

Children perform a play in a gym, one holding a fox mask, with a tree prop and audience watching.

Summer at Spaulding brings endless opportunities for growth, learning, smiles, exploration and most importantly, the creation of classic childhood memories for the children in our care.

Recently, our students helped put on our annual Arts Festival, an opportunity for our campus to come together, appreciate, participate in, and learn about the impact of the arts. Given the recent warmer weather, this year’s festival was appropriately themed One Day in the Rainforest. We welcomed visiting artists Mark Ragonese and John Hatab, who created a gigantic Spaulding tree to act as the focal point of the event. Our students performed alongside our visiting artists, playing musical instruments and taking on the roles of rainforest animals.

A week after we immersed ourselves in the arts, our campus came together again for one of our favorite events of the summer: Field Day! We beat the heat with an action-packed day full of games, activities, bounce houses and even a slip and slide. Our students enjoyed time in the sunshine as laughter, smiles and cheer radiated throughout our sweeping green quad.

Field Day was a much-deserved day of fun and relaxation after many of our students took home medals at the Special Olympics State Summer Games as part of our Spaulding Shooting Stars Team. Competing in various track and field events fostered feelings of confidence, pride and courage — winning was just an added bonus!

SECOND ANNUAL SPAULDING WOODS 50K

On July 12, we opened our campus to the community as runners took to our network of trails to compete in the second annual Spaulding Woods 50K. The ultramarathon, hosted by Race Away Events LLC, brought 60 competitors to our campus, adorned with race bibs creatively designed by our students. A portion of ticket sales from the completely sold-out event was thoughtfully donated to our organization. Thank you to Race Away Events for their dedication, generosity and undeniable energy felt by all in attendance. We are already looking forward to next year!
