Home-style cottages at Spaulding
Children learn and grow best in a warm, nurturing and safe environment. At Spaulding Academy & Family Services, our cottages offer a home-like environment so that students are free to learn, explore and simply be children.
Cottage living: A warm, nurturing place to call home
Spaulding’s campus is home to six year-round residential cottages: Colcord, Cutter Wiggins, Davis, Lambert, Young and Wednesday House. Each cottage can accommodate 8-12 residents and students are placed in cottages according to their needs and abilities. Students are given their own rooms, with the exception of Wednesday House where they may have roommates. Regardless, students are free to personalize and decorate them as they like, this provides our residents with privacy, safety and ownership. Our residential cottages are equipped with a full kitchen, where students learn to prepare meals and snacks.

FAQs
How many students reside on the Spaulding campus?
We have six residential cottages: Davis, Young House, Wednesday House, Colcord, Lamber and Cutter Wiggins. All cottages are open year-round, and can accommodate between 8-12 students each. Students are placed in cottages according to their needs and abilities. The Residential Program promotes interaction among peers and with classmates living in other residences as part of our ‘one community’ philosophy. Residential students attend public school, the Spaulding school or daycare as identified in their treatment plan. Regardless of the students educational placement, we strive for “one campus, one community”.
Do students share rooms?
No, with the exception of Wednesday House, where students may have roommates. In all other cottages, each student will have his or her own room. Regardless, students are encouraged to personalize their room with their belongings. This provides the student with privacy, safety and ownership.
What is the student to staff ratio in the residential program?
Staffing ratios range from 4-to-1 to 2-to-1 depending on the needs of individual students. In some cases, a student may have 1-on-1 support in their cottage.
How are children kept secure overnight?
Each cottage has at least two overnight staff on duty to keep children safe overnight.
What services are offered after school, evenings and weekends?
Residential students participate in planned after school activities Monday through Thursday. Students are engaged in community trips, or other community based activities as well as other staff lead after school activities on campus.
Do residential students prepare meals and eat in their cottages?
During the week, students eat dinner in their cottages and breakfast and lunch together in the Dining Hall. On the weekends, students eat all meals in their cottage. Wednesday House is the exception as its residents eat all meals in the cottage. A few times a week, the staff and students plan, shop and prepare a meal in the residence. Healthy snacks and food preparation is also a part of residential life and the Independent Living Skills Program. Each cottage has a fully-equipped kitchen where students learn to prepare meals and snacks.
