TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH ART: ROBYN ALLEN RECOGNIZED WITH GOVERNOR’S AWARD

Robyn Allen’s classroom is far more than a typical art room. Best described by one of her colleagues as “a safe haven where students of all abilities are welcomed, supported and encouraged to grow,” Robyn’s art class is a space for students to come together and freely express themselves.

On any given day at Spaulding, students walk out of her classroom with much more than a handcrafted piece of work — they leave with newfound confidence, self-worth, connection and courage, and are nourished through her impactful and adaptive lessons.

When Robyn’s colleagues heard about the Governor’s Arts Education Award, an award recognizing an individual, nonprofit organization, school district or community that has made an outstanding contribution to arts education within the past three years, they knew there was no individual in the state — or world — more worthy of this nomination.

Numerous employees eagerly came forward to detail the magnitude of Robyn’s lasting impact on the Spaulding community. Through their letters of nomination — one even describing her as “the best art teacher in the world” — they carefully painted the picture, illustrating the unique ways in which she transforms students’ lives every day through her work.

“One of the most inspiring aspects of Robyn’s work is her ability to adapt artistic instruction to meet the diverse needs of each student. Whether through sensory-friendly activities, assistive technology, or individualized techniques combined with her patience, love for all students and compassionate support, Robyn ensures that each and every student has the opportunity to explore their creativity in meaningful and empowering ways,” said a colleague in one letter.

On October 8, surrounded by friends and family at the state house in Concord, Robyn accepted the Governor’s Arts Education Award.

When asked what winning this award meant to her, she said, “Growing up, I was fortunate to observe my mother, an art teacher, as she inspired and connected with her students. This foundation drew me to teaching, where I was consistently drawn to students needing extra support and understanding. When I began working at Spaulding, I immediately knew that teaching the arts here was exactly where I was meant to be. I feel incredibly fortunate to do what I love every single day, and this award is a cherished acknowledgment of that journey.”
